How Many Tentacles? by LaikatheSpaceDog How Many Tentacles? by LaikatheSpaceDog
So, here's me at my most spontaneous. My original plan was to do something that looked like a black-velvet Cthulhu painting. I took some watercolor paper, taped it down, and made a couple heavy ink washes to black it all out.

My intention was to carefully build up the painting from there, carefully working from dark to light... but I kind of ended up just sloshing paint around. Gone was Cthulhu and in evidence was yet another squid creature with too many tentacles.

It's a little messy. My some of my paint-sloshy friends will like it.

That's interesting, because usually when I paint, I go flat colors first, leaving space for light colors, then dark colors, then light colors. I suppose I like to see what the colors are in their natural state before adding or subtracting light from them. Sometimes I might have to erase paint with acetone if I want to add more light though, but this has it's own effect in producing a different color, so sometimes I do it on purpose =)

That's generally what I do to.. I'll block in colors and render from there. I know, as a watercolorist, I'm "supposed" to preserve the white of the page, but I've always been terrible at that!
